N Acetylcarnosine for Pets FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Nu-Eyes™ for pets

Q. Can I use Nu-Eyes for my dog's cataract?

A: Happily many dog owners are using this product to effectively address their pet's cataract condition, even veterinarians are choosing to use Nu-Eyes™. Results in the Russian clinical trials were quite impressive with canines with no negative side effects. Dr. Babizhayev has noted that N-acetylcarnosine appears to work even more effectively in canines than in humans. The dosage for animals has not yet been clearly defined so most pet owners are following the dosage recommendation for humans and are applying 2 to 4 drops per affected eye daily. Smaller dogs may need only 1 drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily. Larger dogs will usually need 2 drops to affected eye(s) twice daily. The use of any drug for your animals should be discussed with your veterinarian.

Q. What are the ingredients?

Ingredients:
* N-Acetylcarnosine 1.0%

Q. Are Nu-Eyes™ Eye drops really safe for animals?

A: Yes. Nu-Eyes™N-Acetylcarnosine eye drops have been researched in humans and in animals for over 10 years and have been used for more than 5 years by thousands in Russia, Europe and the US without reports of side effects or complications. Nu-Eyes™ is manufactured in a GMP (Good Manufacturing Procedures) facility per, however only the lubricants, carboxymethylcellulose sodium and glycerin, are approved by the FDA for ophthalmic use and can be listed as active ingredients on our label. Nu-Eyes™ is not FDA approved for the treatment of canine cataracts as the clinical trials have been conducted primarily in Russia over the last decade. Therefore, N-Acetylcarnosine 1% is listed as an inactive ingredient on the label.

Q. Are there any potential side effects?

A: With this formula, utilized in 10 years of human and animal clinical trials, there have been no reported side effects or contra-indications, even when used every day for up to 2 years.

Q. What if the cataract has been there a long time and the dog is totally blind in that eye?

A: If the cataract is advanced to the point of total blindness the results are likely to be less than a 100% reversal with the use of Nu-Eyes™. Cataracts at this stage often have hardened significantly and are more resistant to the effects of Nu-Eyes™. Once cataracts have reached this advanced stage they become a constant irritant to the animal. The eyes can become very prone to infection as a result. Sadly, in many of the more severe cases, removal of the eye is advised. Nu-Eyes™ can reduce the risk of infection and even reduce these more mature cataracts in some instances with extended use. It is also important to note that the irritation can be significantly reduced as a result of Nu-Eyes™ being applied daily. As always, it is advised to follow the advice of your veterinarian.

Q. How long will each box of Nu-Eyes™ Eye Drops last?

A: Each box of Nu-Eyes™ contains two 5ml vials and each 5ml vial contains approximately 75 drops. Each box of Nu-Eyes™ contains two 5ml vials and each 5ml vial contains approximately 75 drops. If treating both eyes 1 box of Nu-Eyes™ will last 2 weeks. A simple way to plan your use is to know that you will need 1 box per eye, per month.

Two 5ml vials per box will amount to:
1 month supply for both eyes = 2 boxes
2 month supply for both eyes = 4 boxes
4 month supply for both eyes = 8 boxes
6 month supply for both eyes = 12 boxes

When used as a preventive measure or for maintenance purposes, one box of Nu-Eyes™ will last for approximately 8-10 weeks.

Q. How will I be able to tell if the product is working?

A: In animals, the cataract is very visible to our view. We encourage you to take a digital photo of your dog’s eye(s) prior to starting Nu-Eyes™. You can actually see the cataract shrinking over time with the use of this product. The cataract will generally shrink from the outer perimeter inward and so your pet may have improvements in his/her peripheral vision first. The behavior of your pet is the best indicator. With the return of sight and the resulting improved ability to navigate their surroundings come improved confidence, mood and behavior. All of these indicators will clearly let you know that the product is working. At the end of 6 months, visit your veterinarian to determine if it is time to go to the maintenance dose or continue longer with the reversal dose of 3-4 drops daily.

Q. What affects treatment time and effectiveness?

A:All customers who use the product per instruction are likely to see improvements in their pet's cataract condition. The level of results can vary depending upon the maturity of the cataract at the outset of treatment. Additionally, injury induced canine cataracts and canine cataracts that result from steroid medications or diabetes can be more resistant and can take longer to respond to the product. Consistency of application is even more critical to success in the above mentioned scenarios and can mean the difference between minimal results and optimal results.

Pay attention to the D's in your dog's life - Diet, Diabetes, Drugs, and Dehydration.

Initial improvements generally present within the first 2-3 months. Optimal results are achieved with 6 - 12 months use. Once the optimal level of improvement has been reached, within 6-12 months time, use one drop of Nu-Eyes™ as a maintenance dose in each eye six days a week, with a one or two week break every two months.

Q: I have been told that my dog is too small for cataract surgery. Can I use Nu-Eyes™?

A: Nu-Eyes™ is a great solution for those animals for which surgery is not an option and has been successfully used to treat the cataracts of domestic animals of all sizes from Chihuahuas to the largest of breeds.

Q. Will the cataract come back again after it has been reversed?

A: Once optimal level of reversal has been achieved only one drop daily will prevent the return of cataract. At this point the product will last far longer and so it will be far less expensive to maintain the health of your pets' eyes. Keep in mind that the same imbalance that allowed the cataract to form in the first place will still be present in your pet if you discontinue use of the product entirely. Unfortunately cataract will likely return, in a relatively short period of time, unless N-Acetylcarnosine is being applied regularly to the eye.

Q. Will the drops cause any discomfort or stinging in my dogs' eyes?

A: Nu-Eyes™ is buffered to an optimal pH level. There should not be any burning with use of this product-only a soothing relief of any previous irritation. Of course as with all eye drops if you notice behavior in your pet that might indicate burning, immediately consult your veterinarian and discontinue use of the product.

Q. I saw another N-Acetylcarnosine website and it said that the preservative Benzyl Alcohol is not good. Is this true?

A: Definitely not true. Benzyl alcohol has long been utilized in ocular formulations as an FDA approved preservative. In the clinical trials conducted at the famous Helmholtz Institute in Moscow, five formulations were tested with varying preservatives and sources of N-acetylcarnosine. In the end there was one that far surpassed all expectations and parameters. Interestingly it was the formulation with the preservative benzyl alcohol in combination with a unique source and purity level of N-acetylcarnosine. Those who are claiming that benzyl alcohol causes burning do not understand the importance of the critical pH balance of ocular formulations. It is the incorrect balance of pH that can result in burning with some ocular formulations and not the preservative.  Many customers use Nu-Eyes ™ for dry eye syndrome, contact lens use and for eye strain relief. It is this formulation that was tested over time and proven in controlled, clinical environments to reverse cataracts with no reported side effects.
